For centuries, they were used by the area’s inhabitants as temporary dwellings and livestock shelters, directly linked to livestock farming and the traditional transhumance system known as the muda.

The Pasiego cabins are much more than just old rural buildings. Their architecture directly reflects the climate, the terrain, and the way of life of their inhabitants, making them one of the most unique examples of traditional Cantabrian architecture. It is estimated that there are around 10,000 cabins distributed throughout the Pasiegos Valleys, forming one of the most distinctive examples of rural architecture in the region.

The history of the Pasiego cabins

To understand the architecture of the Pasiego cabins, it’s essential to first understand the way of life that gave rise to them. For centuries, the inhabitants of the Pasiego Valleys practiced a local transhumance system known as “la muda.” Families moved from one cabin to another throughout the year in search of the best pastures to feed their livestock. This way of life necessitated the existence of small buildings scattered across the territory. The cabins provided a place to stay temporarily and, at the same time, kept livestock protected.

The first documented references to this type of construction date back to the 16th century, although their origins can be found in shelters used by shepherds during the Middle Ages. Over time, especially during the 18th and 19th centuries, the Pasiego cabin model we know today became established.

Its interior layout reflected this dual function. The lower floor was primarily for the livestock, while the upper floor served as living space and for storing hay.

The architecture of the Pasiego cabins

One of the most interesting characteristics of Pasiego cabins is that their architecture is entirely dictated by their location. Winters in the Pasiego Valleys are damp and cold, with abundant rain and snow. For this reason, traditional buildings utilize local materials and construction techniques that provide protection from the harsh weather.

Stone Walls

The cabins generally feature thick masonry walls, built with local stone. The use of local materials allows the buildings to blend seamlessly into the landscape and, at the same time, provides high thermal inertia. Stone thus becomes one of the elements that best defines the image of Pasiego architecture.

Steep Roofs

Another characteristic feature is the gabled roof with a considerable slope. This design facilitates the drainage of rainwater and snow, which is especially important in such a humid climate. Traditionally, the roofs were made with slabs, large, flat pieces of local limestone. Its weight and arrangement provided a sturdy roof, well-suited to the region’s climate.

The interior structure was primarily made of wood, using species such as oak and chestnut.

Small Windows and Orientation

Pasiego cabins generally have few openings and small windows. This characteristic addresses a fundamental need: to retain heat inside during the colder months. When openings face south, they allow for better use of solar radiation and natural light.

Traditional architecture thus demonstrates how many seemingly aesthetic choices actually responded to climatic and functional needs.

The “patín” and the “solana”

Among the most recognizable features of Pasiego cabins is the “patín”, an external stone staircase that provides direct access to the upper floor of the house.

Also noteworthy is the “solana”, a kind of balcony or gallery usually facing south. The “solana” allowed residents to take advantage of the sunny hours and was used, among other things, for drying hay. Not all Pasiego cabins have this feature, but those that do have a particularly distinctive appearance.

These elements demonstrate once again how architecture was closely linked to the needs of daily life.

The Pasiego Cabins and the Landscape

The relationship between the cabins and the landscape is probably one of their most interesting aspects.

The buildings appear scattered across the hillsides, linked to the plots used for livestock. Around them, the traditional dry-stone walls define the land and create the characteristic fragmented landscape of the Pasiego Valleys. These are not, therefore, isolated structures. The cabin, the meadows, the walls, and the paths form part of the same system.

This relationship between architecture, landscape, and livestock farming is one of the reasons why the Pasiego heritage has such significant cultural value.

Tradition and Contemporary Architecture

One of the most interesting aspects of current renovations is precisely the dialogue between traditional and contemporary architecture. Today’s needs are very different from those that existed when the cabins were built.

A contemporary home requires different lighting, installations, insulation, and comfort levels. Therefore, some renovations incorporate new openings and large windows to improve the entry of natural light and establish a more direct relationship between the interior and the landscape. The challenge lies in finding a balance between these new needs and the preservation of the original building’s architectural and landscape values.

A respectful renovation doesn’t necessarily have to transform the cabin into a building completely identical to the original. It can incorporate contemporary solutions as long as these are able to harmonize with the existing structure and the landscape.

A Living Heritage

The Pasiego cabins represent an architecture born directly from the needs of the people who inhabited the region. Their orientation, materials, the thickness of their walls, the slope of their roofs, and the layout of their spaces are not arbitrary decisions. They are the result of centuries of adaptation to the climate, the terrain, and a particular way of life.

Today, the rehabilitation of these buildings presents a new challenge: preserving this heritage while simultaneously making them habitable again.

The future of the Pasiego cabins will depend largely on finding this balance between conservation, functionality, and new ways of living in the region.

If you’ve had the chance to explore the Pasiegos Valleys, in addition to enjoying their mountains, meadows, and landscapes, you’ve surely come across one of their most characteristic structures: the Pasiego cabins.
