Wooden Made

Site: Vallecas, Madrid
Competition: 2011

The Wooden Made project originated as a proposal for the renovation of the San Francisco Javier and Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles municipal housing complexes in the Vallecas district of Madrid. The deterioration of the old buildings necessitated their replacement with a new development of sustainable public housing, adapted to current needs for comfort, energy efficiency, and quality of life.

At Angulo Arquitectura, we are committed to contemporary, efficient, and people-centered architecture, where every design decision aims to improve the well-being of residents and reduce the building’s environmental impact.

Bright, Airy, and Efficient Homes

Wooden Made is designed as a through-unit building that maximizes natural light and promotes cross-ventilation in all apartments.

Thanks to this layout, the apartments have dual orientation and a better connection to the outdoors, creating brighter, more comfortable, and healthier spaces for their inhabitants.

The open galleries also function as intermediate spaces that help regulate the building’s temperature: they capture heat in winter and provide protection from excessive sunlight during the summer.

Sustainable Architecture Built with Wood

One of the project’s key elements is the use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) in much of the building’s structure. This material reduces the construction’s environmental impact and improves the thermal and acoustic insulation of the homes.

The combination of wood and concrete creates a more efficient, lightweight, and sustainable building, aligned with new approaches to residential architecture that are more environmentally responsible.

Furthermore, the façade incorporates insulation and solar shading systems that help reduce energy consumption and improve interior comfort year-round.

Solar Shading and Natural Comfort

Although the plot’s orientation is not ideal, the project incorporates various solutions to control sunlight and improve the building’s climate performance.

Horizontal overhangs and vertical louvers help protect the homes from summer heat and allow for better use of sunlight in winter. This combination creates a dynamic façade that changes with the light, adding movement and lightness to the overall design.

The goal is to reduce the need for artificial climate control and achieve more comfortable homes naturally.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

Wooden Made incorporates passive systems and sustainable energy solutions to reduce the building’s energy consumption.

Among these, the use of a Canadian Well stands out, a system that takes advantage of the natural temperature of the ground to cool the air in summer and improve thermal comfort in winter.

The project also integrates efficient ventilation systems and energy-saving strategies that allow for a considerable reduction in consumption compared to a conventional residential building.

A Building Adapted to the Urban Environment

The plot has a significant slope, so the building adapts to the topography with a plinth that facilitates access and improves its connection to the street.

The organization of the volume into two blocks allows the building to open up towards Avenida San Diego and improves both the orientation of the apartments and the entry of natural light.

The common areas and vertical circulation are sheltered between the two volumes, creating more comfortable zones better adapted to the climate.

Contemporary and Sustainable Public Housing

The Wooden Made project is committed to a new model of public housing based on sustainability, energy efficiency, and architectural quality. The proposal combines bioclimatic architecture, sustainable materials, and passive solutions to create healthier, more efficient homes that are better prepared for the city’s future needs.

With this project, Angulo Arquitectura proposes a more responsible way of living, where architecture, sustainability, and well-being coexist in harmony.

The arrangement of the slats allows the user to regulate the incidence of sunlight, generating a play of light and shadow that provides lightness and dynamism to the whole
