The house is located on an elevated 750 m² plot, with a constructed area of 250 m², taking full advantage of the surrounding topographical and landscape conditions. The design is based on an essential premise: orienting the largest number of rooms toward the Cantabrian Sea, establishing a continuous visual axis between the coastline and the interior landscape.
The formal solution is embodied in two large rectangular volumes with a tubular section, arranged longitudinally and resting on a lightweight base. This configuration not only frees up the ground plane, reducing the visual impact on the terrain, but also generates a sense of structural lightness that blends with the surroundings. The north and south facades open generously to the landscape, while the east and west orientations are reserved for more private functions, such as bathrooms and service areas, with more discreet openings that do not interrupt the main visual axis.
Upon entering, the first thing that catches your eye are the double-height spaces, which provide volume, spaciousness, and a sense of freedom. The main rooms face north, toward the sea, and south, toward the green fields and forests surrounding Plentzia.
Each window becomes a natural scene, each room a refuge with a view. The house thus becomes a sensorial experience, where the landscape enters and becomes part of the home.
The exterior is composed of highly durable and low-maintenance materials, such as exposed concrete, metal frames, and solar-control glass. This choice responds to criteria of landscape integration, resistance to marine exposure, and energy efficiency. The result is a sober, elegant architecture deeply connected to its surroundings.
This project is an example of contemporary architecture in Vizcaya, where the design responds not only to functional criteria but also to emotional ones. The house in Barrika represents a way of living in harmony with the landscape, without sacrificing innovation or beauty. It’s a house that doesn’t impose itself, but rather engages with its location; it doesn’t hide, but neither does it shout. A project that, like the sea that surrounds it, flows naturally and powerfully.
