Binoculars House

Location: Valle de Mena, Burgos
Design: 2011
Construction: 2015-2018

Binoculars is a single-family home designed by Angulo Arquitectura in Gijano de Mena, a privileged natural setting surrounded by mountains, vegetation, and expansive views of the landscape. The project was conceived with the aim of integrating architecture and nature, creating a contemporary home that takes advantage of the unique conditions of the plot and establishes a constant relationship with its surroundings.

The house is located on a 4,500 m² plot organized into different natural platforms. Its placement utilizes an intermediate area of the terrain to adapt to the slope naturally, minimizing the impact on the landscape and enhancing the views from the main rooms of the house.

A house integrated into the landscape

The architectural design seeks to make the house part of the environment rather than imposing itself upon it. The house is situated at a strategic point on the plot where the landscape completely surrounds it, making it a true viewpoint overlooking nature.

Two main volumes organize the day and night areas, creating between them a protected outdoor space intended for leisure and outdoor living. This arrangement also improves the building’s thermal performance and enhances the connection between interior and exterior.

The volumetric composition lends dynamism to the whole through the overlapping of different planes and architectural elements, creating depth and a contemporary image perfectly integrated into the landscape.

Contemporary Architecture and Large Windows

The house features clean lines and a restrained aesthetic that reinforces its connection with the natural surroundings.

The dark-toned facades contrast with the large windows, which allow abundant natural light and offer panoramic views of the landscape from virtually every room. Thanks to this transparency, the exterior becomes a natural extension of the interior spaces.

The north-south orientation has been carefully considered to optimize the use of sunlight and improve the house’s energy efficiency throughout the year.

Sustainable Design and Energy Efficiency

Sustainability has been an integral part of the project since its inception. The construction utilizes industrialized and semi-industrialized materials selected for their durability, efficiency, and reduced environmental impact.

The house incorporates various energy-saving strategies and natural resource utilization. These include the use of biomass for heating and cooling, a low-temperature radiant floor heating system that enhances interior comfort, and a home automation system that optimizes energy consumption efficiently.

Furthermore, water from sinks and showers is reused to reduce water consumption, while the roof and drainage system collect rainwater for irrigating the gardens.

A Home Designed for Living in Nature

Beyond its architecture, Binoculars proposes a way of living based on connection with the environment. Light, views, vegetation, and the landscape are integral to the daily experience of the house, creating tranquil, comfortable spaces open to nature. With this project, Angulo Arquitectura develops a contemporary home in Gijano de Mena that combines design, sustainability and well-being, demonstrating that architecture can be respectfully integrated into the landscape and improve the quality of life of those who inhabit it.

In motion, several rings or caps that are inserted into each other provide depth and dynamism to the house
