The main action of Angulo arquitectura‘s creative process was to unify two small interior courtyards into a large elongated courtyard, which functions as an atrium, so that the distribution and circulation to the rooms is carried out by means of broken walkways that configure the architectural space of the atrium, crowned with a skylight. All the new elements, walkways and partitions, do not interfere with the bare concrete structure of the original building.
The building, with almost a century of history, presented particular challenges due to its age and the need to preserve significant historical and architectural elements. This balance was achieved by maintaining the essence of the original building while introducing modern and functional elements.
The rooms are developed as rectangular elements, moving away from the classic en-suite room at the entrance. Viroc is used as a new element that dialogues seamlessly with the original painted and exposed brick and concrete beams and pillars. This approach allows the rooms to be more spacious and functional, offering a unique and sophisticated accommodation experience.
The choice of viroc as the predominant material in the renovation was not accidental. Its strength and versatility make it a perfect partner for the original brick and concrete, creating an industrial and modern aesthetic that respects and enhances the building’s history. This material, combined with the exposed brick and concrete beams, provides an interesting and attractive visual contrast, as well as coexisting in perfect harmony with architecturally interesting stained glass windows and the original wooden staircases used to move between floors of the old commercial warehouses.
The new atrium, created by unifying the small interior courtyards, has become the heart of the hotel. This open space not only provides abundant natural light, but also acts as a meeting and relaxation point for guests. The broken walkways connecting the rooms add a dynamic and contemporary element to the design, offering breathtaking views of the atrium and its crowning skylight.
