Reforma, rehabilitación y diseño de hotel en Bilbao, Bizkaia

Hotel Nyx

Location: Bilbao, Bizkaia
Design: 2017
Construction: 2017 – 2018

The Hotel NYX stands imposingly in the heart of Bilbao’s Old Town, occupying one of the city’s most emblematic buildings. This property, steeped in history, was originally the Grand Hotel de Inglaterra, opened at the end of the 19th century. Today, after a thorough renovation, it has regained its 20th-century splendor and has been transformed into a cosmopolitan and modern lifestyle hotel, combining classic elegance with the latest urban trends.

Angulo Arquitectura has carried out a comprehensive renovation of the building, respecting its valuable original façade and large windows, which remain a testament to the passage of time. This intervention has allowed both guests and passersby to continue appreciating the majesty of this historic building, now reborn with a new identity.

To understand the importance of this hotel, we must go back to the 17th century, when the urban area of what we now know as the Old Town began to become too small. The natural expansion of the city shifted toward El Arenal, which soon became the epicenter of social, financial, and cultural life in Bilbao at the time. This growth led to the opening of several hotels, among which the Gran Hotel de Inglaterra stands out, considered the city’s most emblematic hotel.

Opened in June 1876, shortly after the end of the last Carlist War, the hotel was owned by the Zubillaga family. Its privileged location overlooking El Arenal made it the subject of countless tourist postcards. Architect Alfredo de Acebal was in charge of supervising the construction, achieving a successful layout of the rooms within the limited available space. His design sought to harmonize simplicity and elegance with the ventilation, comfort, and hygiene requirements of the time, making it a benchmark for hospitality.

Between 1948 and 1951, the building underwent an expansion and renovation designed by architect Rafael Fontán, giving way to the Hotel Almirante. This new hotel adopted a more classic and monumental style, eliminating the curved corner crowning of Correo Street to incorporate a prominent central body facing the estuary. Later, in 1977, another renovation was carried out that preserved the building’s main structure, transforming it into the headquarters of the Caja Rural Provincial de Vizcaya Credit Cooperative, which later became Laboral Kutxa (Ipar Kutxa).

The Hotel NYX, whose name is based on the Greek goddess who represents the personification of the night, was born with a hotel concept characterized by its cosmopolitan, innovative, and profoundly artistic approach. Art, in all its forms and movements, plays a central role in every corner of the hotel, transforming it into a space where creativity and design merge with the guest experience.

The renovation has been practically complete, preserving only a few original elements, such as the façade and the staircase leading to the rooms. On the ground floor, an open-plan space has been created that welcomes visitors from Correo Street, complemented by an impressive skylight located in the roof. This structure runs through the heart of the building to the ground floor, creating an attractive and luminous visual effect that connects all levels of the hotel.

The hotel has 105 rooms carefully equipped to offer maximum comfort. Special attention has been paid to incorporating cutting-edge technology and essential electronic gadgets for the modern traveler.

One of the most notable spaces at Hotel NYX is its spectacular panoramic terrace, formed by two rooftops that offer privileged views of Bilbao. This space features a bar, a chill-out area, and lounge areas, making it an ideal meeting point for relaxing during Bilbao’s nights.

The hotel’s facilities are complemented by a restaurant offering modern cuisine and a meeting room with capacity for up to 45 people, ideal for corporate events or cultural gatherings. The versatility of these spaces allows the hotel to be both a place of relaxation and a meeting point for Bilbao’s creative and business community.

The NYX Hotel Bilbao presents itself as bold and artistic, designed especially for travelers passionate about the city, art, culture, and the latest trends. Its identity is defined by the lifestyle concept, which imbues every detail of the hotel with modernity and urban sophistication, both in its exterior architecture and interior spaces. Bilbao, a city with a growing artistic interest, becomes the perfect setting for this experience.
