To understand the importance of this hotel, we must go back to the 17th century, when the urban area of what we now know as the Old Town began to become too small. The natural expansion of the city shifted toward El Arenal, which soon became the epicenter of social, financial, and cultural life in Bilbao at the time. This growth led to the opening of several hotels, among which the Gran Hotel de Inglaterra stands out, considered the city’s most emblematic hotel.
Opened in June 1876, shortly after the end of the last Carlist War, the hotel was owned by the Zubillaga family. Its privileged location overlooking El Arenal made it the subject of countless tourist postcards. Architect Alfredo de Acebal was in charge of supervising the construction, achieving a successful layout of the rooms within the limited available space. His design sought to harmonize simplicity and elegance with the ventilation, comfort, and hygiene requirements of the time, making it a benchmark for hospitality.
Between 1948 and 1951, the building underwent an expansion and renovation designed by architect Rafael Fontán, giving way to the Hotel Almirante. This new hotel adopted a more classic and monumental style, eliminating the curved corner crowning of Correo Street to incorporate a prominent central body facing the estuary. Later, in 1977, another renovation was carried out that preserved the building’s main structure, transforming it into the headquarters of the Caja Rural Provincial de Vizcaya Credit Cooperative, which later became Laboral Kutxa (Ipar Kutxa).
