The Alakrana Experience concept aims to change the focus and show in an elegant and creative way the image we have of the sea, by socialising and organising recreational and educational events with the firm intention of preserving in time the history, recipes and traditional fishing gear, as well as the evolution of the first tuna boats up to the present day, all in a museum atmosphere. In short, a symbiosis of gastronomic, technological and social aspects under the concept ‘act local, think global’, as a company rooted in Bermeo and its region, but with an international projection.
The restaurant, in addition to its name, takes the Atún Alakrana de Aleta Amarilla (Yellowfin) as a reference for its design. A fish whose dorsal area is a dark metallic blue or greenish colour. This tone fades to the sides with a subtle golden stripe running along the side, ending in a silvery white belly. The second dorsal fin as well as the pinnulae are vibrant yellow. These tones have served as inspiration for the refurbishment of the restaurant, creating a harmonious and visually relaxed setting. Likewise, the original textures of the building have been maintained and enhanced, as well as implementing new and organic patterns alluding to the marine world, creating a soft and welcoming atmosphere whose nuances will be enriched by the chiaroscuro generated by the different lighting systems.
The Alakrana restaurant aims to be an immersive experience, which transports you to the engine room of a ship. The Tataki Corner is considered the most unique area of the restaurant area. This space is a counter with a ‘high bar’ configuration where diners can observe the kitchen, allowing them to participate in what is happening in the engine room (kitchens) through direct visual contact or real-time video broadcasting of the preparations on the digital screen.
For the bar area, the main objective has been to achieve the atmosphere of a typical Basque tavern. A place where you can have a drink, a pintxo, a coffee, etc. As well as interacting with friends, neighbours and visitors.
The design of the reserved dining area follows the concept of an ‘underwater capsule’ or ‘underwater ecosystem’, using furniture, decoration and lighting in a nautical and marine style evoking the sea.
